FLOWERS FOR MY HOME
A Frida’s Flowers x Welcome Home Team Initiative
Imagine moving into a new home. You’ve been experiencing homelessness and have not had access to basic necessities like running water, clean clothes to wear, or nourishing food. Suddenly, you become connected with the Welcome Home team who can move you into a fully furnished home that includes a fully stocked pantry and cleaning supplies at no cost to you. You breathe a sigh of relief knowing you’re cared for and to your surprise, you’re not just supplied with your basic needs; you’re also gifted with beautiful art and fresh flowers.
The Welcome Home Team
The Welcome Home team began organically in 2015, formed by a group of friends who recognized the need to furnish and equip homes for individuals recently housed after experiencing homelessness. Initially, many newly housed individuals were living inside much like they had been living outside—sleeping on the floor, without utensils, shower curtains, or any other furniture.
Since its inception, the Welcome Home team has transformed over 1,300 households (singles, couples, and families with children) in Indianapolis, partnering with over 15 agencies in the city. Entirely volunteer-run and reliant on donations, this dedicated team serves our community every Saturday, turning empty places into homes.
When people live in homes equipped with beds, forks, towels, and couches, it significantly increases their likelihood of remaining housed and experiencing the health and well-being that is often unattainable when homeless.

WHY DOES THIS INITIATIVE MATTER?
THE FLOWERS FOR MY HOME INITIATIVE matters for a multitude of reasons, but for Frida’s Flowers it matters because we’re interested in seeing statistically increased well-being for this community. It is not enough to provide one’s basic needs; we must move beyond our own ideas of what is practical, and begin to recognize the importance and impact of beauty & art on our souls.
Renowned artist Makoto Fujimura shares a story about a time when he and his partner did not have the means to buy luxury items like flowers. One day, his partner brought home a bouquet of flowers, to which he responded angrily as he thought she was being inconsiderate. He exclaimed “how could you think of buying flowers when we can’t even eat!” She responded, “we have to feed our souls too.”
It is precisely this idea of increased well-being and soul-care that matters. If we want to enact positive change in society, we cannot skim the surface by relying on practicality. It is not enough for people’s bellies to be full; we have to act generously to ensure that people have the ability and inspiration to feed their souls, too.
WHERE WE COME IN
Frida’s Flowers will supply vibrant floral pieces to each client who moves into a new home from August-March ‘25. We believe this will increase well-being and dignity in each of their lives. It is important to celebrate their new beginnings with abundant generosity and radical belief in their innate worthiness.
